| Trip Description | The route begins with a steady climb from the trailhead up talus slopes to the cave band. The “caves” are not deep caverns but a series of flood-scoured basalt alcoves formed when Ice Age Floodwaters created powerful back-eddies along the coulee wall. These alcoves later served as shelter and vantage points for Indigenous peoples traveling and living in the region.
After visiting the main cave openings, the hike continues beyond the typical turnaround point. The trail ascends onto the cliff-top benchlands and proceeds south along the rim above Lenore Lake, following faint paths and open basalt benches. Photo by motherofadventure from WTA.org |
