Trip Description | We’ll explore Cowiche Canyon in an approximately 8-mile loop covering the entire length of the preserve, start at the east trailhead and walk the Canyon Trail to the Lone Pine Trail. Climb the Lone Pine Trail to Radio Flyer and go left to the South Rim Trail. Walk the length of the South Rim Trail to the East Uplands Trail and follow this trail down to the Canyon Trail and back to the east trailhead.
The preserve is a beautiful mix of rugged canyon and open uplands just outside Yakima. The trail through the canyon leads us beneath dramatic basalt and andesite cliffs, with Cowiche Creek winding below and golden colors lighting up the hillsides. From the canyon floor, we can branch into the uplands, where the wide-open sagebrush country offers sweeping views of the Yakima Valley and distant Cascade peaks. The hiking here is generally moderate, with well-graded paths in the canyon and steeper climbs leading up to the ridge tops. Whether we stay low along the creek or wander higher into the open country, we’ll be rewarded with crisp autumn air, vibrant fall scenery, and plenty of room to roam. Come prepared with the 10 essentials and lunch for the trail. If the group decides we may plan to stop for a meal on the return trip home. No passes are required to park at the trailhead.
