The Saturday weather forecast for rain, along with thunder and lightning, forced the cancellation of the day hike at Dishman Hills in Spokane. The bad weather continued into Sunday, but luckily for us, the sun was shining in the Teanaways!

We headed to the Teanaway Community Forest on Sunday with the goal of hiking two trails – Yellow Scissors and Self-Employed Loop and the Cheese Rock Trail. We arrived at the trailhead about 9:30 a.m. to find cars lining both sides of the road! Apparently a popular trail race was taking place, but we decided to take our chances on the trails knowing they could be very crowded. It turned out not to be too much of a conflict and the races were over by about noon.

With temperatures in the 50’s and alternating sun and clouds, we hiked Yellow Scissors and Self-Employed Loop first. Spring flowers were still blooming and we had a great view of the Stuart Range from the top of a huge rock found at the end of Frog Pond Rock Trail. After having lunch along the bank of the West Fork Teanaway River, we headed up to Cheese Rock. In addition to the unusual looking Cheese Rock, there were several other rocks (very big rocks), we enjoyed climbing on to once again have views of the Stuart Range.

We hiked a total of about 11 miles with 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
