| Trip Description | The Eastern Washington Orienteering Club (EWOC, https://www.ewoc.org/) is hosting an orienteering event at “The Quarry” in Spokane, on Saturday April 25th. This is a fantastic opportunity to practice your navigation skills, and IMAC will be organizing a carpool. The Quarry is part of the Spokane conservation district (https://spokanecd.org/pages/the-quarry), and is home to the Scale House Market.
EWOC is organizing three courses (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) that are specifically designed to test your map-reading and navigation skills. Each course consists of a series of checkpoints to find, marked on a custom made International Orienteering Federation topographic map. Courses can be done individually or in small groups. Since The Quarry is a fairly small venue, so the courses are “Sprint Length”, which means around 1 or 2 miles each. You can treat each course as a fun hike with a treasure hunt, or as an athletic challenge to find the checkpoints as quickly as possible. If you finish quickly enough, you may have time for a second course. For more details about the event, check out the EWOC’s FAQ (https://ewoc.org/FAQ/), or contact trip-leader, Ben Legg. This will be a good intro-to-orienteering event, with more challenging events coming later this spring and summer. We will be carpooling from the CBC parking lot. We will leave fairly early, so we can have time for a beginner-orientation clinic before the courses open at 10:00 AM. Please bring cash to reimburse your carpool driver and $12 to pay the EWOC event registration (we can register onsite). Bring a compass if you have one; EWOC can lone you one if you don’t. Grippy hiking shoes or trail runners and long pants are recommended, since you may be hiking or running off-trail. A change of clothes for after the race is a good idea. |
