Member Discussion: Welcoming the Next Generation Outdoors
The Intermountain Alpine Club (IMAC) is exploring ways to expand opportunities that introduce children and families to outdoor recreation while continuing to advance the club’s mission of adventure, education, and stewardship. Members are invited to participate in an open discussion on Sunday, April 12 at 2:00 PM at Leslie Groves Park.
While IMAC has a strong tradition of mountaineering, hiking, climbing, and backcountry travel, the club is interested in developing ways to help young people discover the outdoors and build early connections with wild places. This conversation will focus on how IMAC can thoughtfully invite youth participation—whether through family-friendly outings, educational events, mentorship opportunities, or introductory activities designed specifically for children.
Members are encouraged to bring ideas and perspectives on topics such as:
Activities that could introduce children to hiking, climbing, snow travel, and outdoor skills
Youth-focused educational or stewardship opportunities
Mentorship or introductory programs led by experienced IMAC members
Event formats that make outdoor participation accessible and engaging for younger audiences
An important part of the conversation will also address risk management and communication. Outdoor activities inherently involve hazards, and youth participation requires additional care and clarity. The club must consider questions such as:
How should risks be communicated clearly to participating families?
What expectations should be established for supervision and participation?
What activity guidelines or safety practices should accompany youth-focused events?
How can IMAC ensure trip leaders feel supported and comfortable offering youth-inclusive activities?
By discussing these considerations openly, IMAC can help ensure that any youth-oriented programming remains consistent with the club’s long-standing emphasis on safety, responsibility, and informed participation.
Many of IMAC’s most successful programs began with member ideas and collaborative planning. This discussion is an opportunity to think creatively about how the club can share the outdoors with the next generation while maintaining the thoughtful standards that have long guided IMAC activities.
Members interested in helping shape these efforts are encouraged to attend. Your ideas will help inform how IMAC continues to inspire curiosity, adventure, and stewardship among future outdoor enthusiasts.
