Talk: Backcountry to the Cosmos: A Trekker’s Guide to the Northern Lights Curious why the Sun has been putting on such a show lately and why the Northern Lights seem to be dancing across our skies more often and more spectacularly? Join Dr. Elizabeth MacDonald, a heliophysicist with nearly 30 years of experience studying the magical glitter of the aurora throughout the Pacific Northwest and beyond. She is the founder of Aurorasaurus, a global citizen-science project that brings together skywatchers and world-class outdoor photographers to track and understand auroral activity in real time. Although she is a scientist and not a photographer, her work connects her with extraordinary aurora images and stories from around the world, many of which she will share as she demystifies this beautiful and elusive phenomenon. With a knack for making complex space weather both accessible and awe-inspiring, Dr. MacDonald will explain what is behind the aurora’s recent uptick and how you can embark on a cosmic adventure of your own, whether close to home or farther afield. Originally from Walla Walla, she now works remotely from there for NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and enjoys skiing, foraging, and hiking in her spare time. Ticket price: |
