Crystal Peak, DH-4

Crystal Peak is located in the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park. The trailhead is on the east side of Highway 410, near Crystal Creek, just north of the White River park entrance. This trail can be found on Green Trails Map No. 270 “Mount Rainier East”. The first mile and a half of the trail is series of steep switchbacks through dense forest. Fortunately, the views of Mt. Rainier will give us good reason to stop for a rest and enjoy the scenery. The trail then splits, with the left fork leading to Crystal Lakes, which is a nice DH-3 hike, but we’re going to keep right, and, after a deceptive PUD (Pointless Up & Down), start climbing for real!! Depending on the source, the hike is 7.6 – 8.0 miles with an elevation gain of 3,100’ – 3,400’. Hard work regardless. But, the views make it worthwhile. On a clear day you can see six volcanoes from Hood to Baker, with Mt. Rainier right in your face the whole time. It’s a pretty hard hike so, along with your determination, bring plenty of food, water and your ten essentials.
Transportation cost is $30. No entrance fees required.
Group size is limited to 12 hikers.
